When you pick up a bag of granola, check out a couple of things. First, how big is the bag? Most companies sell granola in 12 ounce bags, but more and more we are seeing 11 ounce or 9 ounce bags (you might want to keep this in mind when you compare prices). There are a few companies who sell in 16 ounce bags but this size is not as common.
The second thing to look for is serving size, indicated right at the top of the nutrition label that every food product is required to place on their packaging. The customary serving size for granola is about ¼ cup, or 30g, which is what our nutrition facts are based on. This amount is a good general indicator because many people eat granola as a healthy snack or add granola to other foods such as yogurt, fruit, ice cream, or on top of another cereal. A quarter cup of granola will make a great addition to these favorites. And if you make a meal of granola by itself with some milk - which is our favorite way to eat it! - you don't need as much as, say, more highly processed cereals or bread products. Since granola has so many complex carbohydrates, it is more satisfying than many other foods.
